north east gay scene sunderland

Gay Sunderland

Sunderland is the North East's largest city (between Leeds and Edinburgh) and is situated on the mouth of the River Wear, in the metropolitan borough of Tyne and Wear.

As the 26th largest city in England, Sunderland is ideally situated right on the coast and boasts stunning coastal scenery whilst being surrounded by green countryside. Although it has some major redevelopment in recent years, Sunderland is still in need of some major development to compete with neighbours such as Newcastle and Gateshead - however plans are in place to move the city forward albeit progress is a bit slow!

Sunderland is in no way as big as its neighbour Newcastle when it comes to having a gay scene of its own, or 100 % gay venues - however it does cater well for the LGBT community by offering 'Gay Nights' on a Tuesday and Gay Friendly venues!

Sunderland city centre has a wide selection of contemporary and traditional bars and night clubs, a fantastic casino, huge range of restaurants and hotels, and is also home to annual concerts hosted at the Stadium of Light and Empire Theatre.
